Formerly the Station Hotel, it was bought at auction by Hadrian Border Brewery in January 2015 and reopened after a 22-month, £350,000-plus refurbishment. The work uncovered stonework hidden for years and found that the pub had come away from its back wall, which is the embankment of the railway itself; the building is now held up by new steelwork, left on show alongside the stone. The frontage is dark green panelling with gold lettering and brass lanterns, next to the passage under the arches.
It serves Hadrian Border’s real ales and does not serve food. Open from 14:00 on Monday and Tuesday and from noon the rest of the week, until 23:00 Wednesday to Saturday and 22:00 on other nights. Contact: 0191 477 2602, stationeast@hadrian-border-brewery.co.uk, or Facebook.
There is a full programme of live events. This site does not keep a list of them, because a copied list goes out of date within a week: see the pub’s Facebook events page for what’s on.

The pub sits under the Grade II listed railway bridge over Hills Street, built for the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway (see Listed buildings). October 2026.
The address is 1 Hills Street, NE8 2AS; the brewery’s own page misspells it as Hill Street.
