The council cleared the former G Scott Cars garage site under the railway and turned its seven arches and forecourt into a space for pop-up food stalls, performances, workshops and events through the year, funded by the North East Combined Authority. The arch fronts were painted by a team led by Mark One87 of Elements Arts, with the artists Sune and Ida4, working from ideas gathered from Gateshead College students, the Gateshead Recovery Partnership, Orbis Community and local businesses. Each arch carries one large letter, so that read together they spell the town’s name, and each is filled with the town’s people and places: the Angel of the North, with the borough motto Caput inter nubila condit, “it hides its head among the clouds”; portraits of local innovators under the words “game changers, self made innovators”; and two hands making a heart. The murals were unveiled at a pop-up event on 12 April 2026, and the space was officially launched in May 2026.
In use
The forecourt’s first big summer outing was the Gateshead Food Festival on Sunday 2 August 2026, which filled the space in front of the murals with gazebos, food vans and a cookery theatre and spilled round to the square by the Tyne Bridge approach.
