Where it is
NZ 2522 6343 OS grid · 54.96491, -1.60762
A single L-shaped building of coursed sandstone with tall chimney stacks and sash windows: the short arm gables onto the Hudson Street bridge, the long arm runs back to close the view from Greensfield Close, where Motivo now faces it. The most recent refurbishment added skylights in the roof of the long arm, under the blue metal covering visible from Fletcher Road. Its tenants include Last Arrow Games, whose sign is on the gable, and it has a barrier-controlled private car park.
What it was
The Tyne and Wear Historic Environment Record has an entry for the “Greenesfield Railway Works, office block” (HER 16150): a two-storey L-shaped building of square coursed sandstone, windows with plain surrounds, decorative cornicing, a doorway with its original frame and a staircase, built between the 1858 and 1894 Ordnance Survey editions and recorded by Northern Counties Archaeological Services in 2001 and 2003 before the estate was built. Its grid reference, NZ 2524 6343, falls on this corner of Fletcher Road, and New Eden House is that building. The record listed it as demolished; the Tyne and Wear Archaeology team confirmed in October 2026 that this was a mistake in the record, and has corrected it to show the building still standing (the change will appear on Sitelines in due course). The works’ offices are where the Chief Mechanical Engineer would have sat, which fits the Raven plaque.
Neither the HER nor a search of the National Heritage List turns up a listing for it; the only listed survivor of the works named in the HER is the former Station Hotel (Grade II). Treat “not listed” as likely, not confirmed.
