The former Boiler Shop at dusk: a long two-storey sandstone building under a slate roof, a round window in its gable, tall round-headed windows along the side and small windows above, with residents' parking bays in front and newer flats beyond
Ochre Mews, the converted Boiler Shop, from its car park. September 2026.

The freeholder is Dickinson Egerton (RBM) Ltd (until 2023 Dickinson Harrison (RBM) Ltd): the 2023 service charge demands named it as landlord, and Hunters manages the building as its agent, according to a 2024 First-tier Tribunal decision (MAN/00CH/LSC/2023/0031). That decision upheld the freeholder’s apportionment of service charges by floor area across five duplexes; the decision is a public record and worth reading before buying here.

Mandale Homes’ conversion of the Grade II listed works building won Best Residential Renovation/Redevelopment in the UK at the 2022 UK Property Awards. The car park is inside the arches, behind a pair of gates cut with two North Eastern Railway tank engines on a lattice bridge — the best piece of new ironwork on the estate and easy to miss after dark.

The gates to the vaulted car park, September 2026. The listed building is the works’ former Boiler Shop, list entry 1248971, Grade II since 1979: circa 1877, snecked squared stone with bands and a bracketed cornice under a Welsh slate roof, two storeys over a tall basement that grows as the hill drops, ten bays with round-arched openings below and segmental above, round windows in the gables, and inside “a completely barrel vaulted ground storey with ten parallel vaults on substantial piers” — the vaults that are now the car park behind the engine gates. When listed it was a vehicle repair shop. The scheme was consented as DC/20/00137/FUL in 2020 as 58 homes: 42 in the listed building and 16 in a three-storey annex beside it, with EV charging required by condition. As built there are 59, and the second building is not a plain new-build: it is an older red-brick range with stone-silled windows, carrying a new clad top storey, entered through its own door for flats 45–59.

The managing agent’s sign on the building gives Hunters Residential Block Management’s contact details: 01422 893 726, blockmanagement@hunters.com and huntersrbm.com, an address that no longer works; see Hunters Residential Block Management for its current details.

The name

Ochre Mews is the scheme's name; the building is the works' Boiler Shop, and the estate's name comes from the ochre-coloured ground of the railway yards.
