The name

Named for No. 60019 Bittern, a Gresley A4 streamliner built at Doncaster in December 1937 and named, like the rest of the class, after a bird. New to Heaton, it was transferred to Gateshead shed, 52A, on 28 March 1943 and stayed twenty years, until October 1963, before ending its working life at Aberdeen Ferryhill. Withdrawn September 1966 and bought for preservation; it is one of six surviving A4s and was running on the main line again from 2007.
