Groups you can join

Friends of Gateshead Town Centre. Residents, businesses and volunteers working on the town centre, including the Railway Quarter: tidy-ups, planting and events. See the group on OurGateshead or its Facebook group. The council also runs occasional town-centre “help out” days with the group.

Tyne Derwent Way. A nine-mile walking route linking places along the Tyne and the Derwent, run by Gateshead Council with the National Trust, the Tyne & Wear Building Preservation Trust and the two Newcastle universities. It passes through Gateshead Riverside Park below the estate, the same park as the sculpture trail. Volunteers can come to “turn up and do” sessions, become regular volunteers or join the community steering group: tynederwentway.co.uk.

Sea Cadets. TS Leviathan on Pipewellgate runs on adult volunteers as well as its cadets.

Get something fixed

Graffiti, fly-tipping, litter, broken lights and damaged benches or plaques on public land go to the council: report environmental issues, report graffiti, or FixMyStreet, which sends reports to the council and shows them publicly. Several of the sculpture-trail plaques are currently tagged. Problems inside a block’s grounds go to its managing agent, listed on each block page.
